5 Types of Pediatric Doctors You Should Know About

Children's Health

Remember how you and your parents saw different doctors when you were growing up? It took a while to click for me that there are doctors who specialize in treating kids.

These doctors, known as pediatric doctors, are graduates of required programs and training in their field, just like every other medical professional. The difference is that many of these doctors receive additional education or residency to specifically treat our children.

General Pediatrician

A general pediatrician is a doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O).

A doctor of medicine is the doctor you see for check-ups, immunizations, and other basic medical care concerns. This is the doctor with whom you will be most familiar as your child will be treated by them from the time they are born until they are an adult.

A doctor of Osteopathic Medicine focuses on healing the entire body. They use manipulation techniques to provide healing to the body. A D.O. can work at a family practice; so they could provide the same care for your children. The main difference between MDs and DOs is their treatment techniques.

Pediatric Surgeon

It makes sense that your child would need to see a different surgeon than you. Different from most adults, children are constantly growing and developing. We all hope that our children will never need a surgical operation, but it is comforting to know that if it is ever needed there is a trained medical professional that can provide the necessary treatment.

Pediatric surgeons are also trained to use ultrasounds to identify and even treat a baby still in the womb.

Pediatric Dentist

Can you imagine taking your child to a dentist that knows how to treat your permanent teeth but not the developing mouth of your child? No thank you. Luckily, pediatric dentists are trained to be able to treat and care for the ever-changing “landscape” of children’s oral health.

While pediatric dentists do regular cleanings and check-ups, they can also do more in-depth treatments like laser treatment for kid’s teeth.

Pediatric Cardiologist

By now, you have probably caught on that most of these doctors do the same things that your doctors do, they just know how to do it for kids. In this case, a pediatric cardiologist is a highly trained specialist that cares for, you guessed it, your child’s heart.

One of the great benefits of pediatric cardiologists is that they are there to help your kids as soon as they are born. I have a cousin who was born with a heart problem, and thank goodness there was a cardiologist who knew what needed to be done to save her life, even though my cousin was just hours old.

Pediatric cardiologists will be with your child every step of the way from diagnosis to treatment to recovery.

 Neonatologist

There are many babies born with severe health problems. It is heartbreaking every time you see that happen. Fortunately, we have neonatologists. Neonatologists are specialists trained in caring for and treating newborns with severe health conditions.

Neonatologists know exactly what needs to be done to help your child. They may not physically perform a lot of the treatments, but they are directing the traffic to get your child the lifesaving help they need.

Other times, it can be less severe and the neonatologist is in the NICU making sure that the babies remain stable and receive the nourishment they need.

Conclusion

I don’t know if you could tell this from my article, but pediatric doctors are awesome! They know just what our children need and can give them the attention and help they deserve.

I hope you found this information useful. Healthy children usually make for happy children, and what is better than seeing your child smile?
